Landscape restoration is ultimately about people. While ecological assessments, scientific planning, and technical expertise are essential, lasting change depends on the willingness of local communities to become active partners in the restoration journey.
During a recent field mission to Wassa under the RECLAIM Programme, the GetCare Foundation team met with Mr. Jonas, a local landowner who welcomed the team to his community and shared his interest in participating in the initiative. Following discussions on the programme's objectives, he expressed his willingness to explore making part of his land available as a demonstration site for future restoration activities.
This interaction reflects one of the guiding principles of the RECLAIM Programme: restoration is most effective when communities are not merely beneficiaries, but active partners in designing and implementing solutions.
By working directly with landowners, traditional authorities, local institutions, and community members, GetCare Foundation seeks to build restoration models that combine ecological recovery with sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, and long-term stewardship of natural resources.
The enthusiasm demonstrated during this engagement reinforces our belief that many communities are ready to embrace practical, locally led approaches that restore productive landscapes while creating new opportunities for future generations.
As RECLAIM continues to expand, partnerships with landowners like Mr. Jonas will play an important role in establishing demonstration landscapes, generating local learning, and showcasing scalable approaches to ecosystem restoration across Ghana and, ultimately, West Africa.
Every successful restoration journey begins with a conversation, grows through trust, and is sustained by community ownership. This visit to Wassa represents another important step toward that shared vision.
