Building Community Resilience
Across the globe, communities are increasingly exposed to the intersecting pressures of climate change, economic instability, conflict, and environmental degradation. The World Bank estimates that climate-related shocks alone could push over 130 million people into poverty by 2030.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, where livelihoods are largely dependent on agriculture, recurring droughts, floods, and market disruptions continue to erode incomes, weaken local systems, and heighten food insecurity. Strengthening community resilience is therefore not only an adaptation strategy—it is fundamental to achieving sustainable and inclusive development.
At GetCare Foundation, we strengthen community resilience through an integrated, systems-based approach that combines livelihood diversification, capacity building, and community-led planning. Our goal is to enable rural communities to withstand shocks, adapt to change, and build pathways toward long-term economic and environmental stability.
How We Do It
We support communities to reduce vulnerability by expanding income opportunities beyond single-source livelihoods. Through agribusiness development, entrepreneurship training, and access to finance, we enable households to build diversified, stable, and shock-resistant income streams. This reduces exposure to climate and market risks while strengthening economic security.
Resilient communities are built on strong local institutions. We work with communities to strengthen governance structures, promote collective action, and support the formation of cooperatives, savings groups, and farmer networks. These systems enhance coordination, improve resource sharing, and provide critical support mechanisms during periods of stress. By building leadership and institutional capacity, we enable communities to drive their own development and recovery processes.
We integrate climate risk management into local development planning. This includes supporting communities with risk assessments, early warning systems, and disaster preparedness strategies tailored to local contexts. Through technical training and knowledge transfer, we equip communities to anticipate, absorb, and respond to climate-related shocks, protecting livelihoods, assets, and ecosystems.
We ensure that resilience-building efforts are not isolated interventions but are connected to structured market systems and long-term economic transition pathways. By linking farmers and rural enterprises to reliable markets, value chains, and local processing opportunities, we move communities from survival-based livelihoods toward stable, income-generating systems that sustain resilience over time.
